The south coast: Galle Fort, Mirissa and the best beaches
The old Dutch town of Galle, palm-lined bays, surf in Weligama and whales off Mirissa.
From December to April the south coast is what most people imagine when they think of Sri Lanka: palm trees leaning over golden beaches, calm blue sea and fresh fish in the evening. The Southern Expressway makes the coast quick to reach from the airport.
Galle Fort
The fortified old town of Galle was built by the Portuguese and greatly expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still a living town, with churches, mosques, old merchant houses, small shops and cafés. Walk the ramparts at sunset, from the clock tower to the lighthouse.
The beaches, from west to east
- Unawatuna: a sheltered bay close to Galle, good for swimming and for families. Busy in high season.
- Weligama: a wide bay with gentle waves, one of the best places in Asia to learn to surf.
- Mirissa: a lively beach with restaurants and the main harbour for whale-watching boats. Coconut Tree Hill is the famous viewpoint.
- Tangalle: long, quieter beaches with more space. Some have strong waves, so check before you swim.
Whale watching
From November to April, and especially from December to March, blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins feed off the south coast. Boats leave Mirissa harbour early in the morning. See whale watching in Sri Lanka.
Best time to visit
December to April is the season. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings rain and high waves; many beaches are then not safe for swimming, though the towns are quieter. October and November are often rainy. In summer, go to the east coast instead.
Tips
- Always ask locally where it is safe to swim. Currents can be strong even on calm-looking days.
- Galle Fort is pleasant in the late afternoon, when the heat goes down.
