Thiranagama beach near Hikkaduwa on the south-west coast

Sri Lanka has beach weather all year, just not on every coast at the same time. The south and west coasts (Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Tangalle) are best from about December to April. The east coast (Arugam Bay, Pasikudah, and Nilaveli and Uppuveli near Trincomalee) is best from about May to September. In October and November heavy showers hit much of the island, so neither coast is reliable then.

Which coast is best in which month?

Sri Lanka has two monsoons, and its Department of Meteorology divides the year into four seasons:

Months Best for the beach Why
December to February South and west coast North-east monsoon: rain in the east, dry and calm in the south-west
March and April South and west coast; surf in Arugam Bay from April Hot, with afternoon thunderstorms
May to September East coast South-west monsoon: rain and high waves in the south and west
October and November Neither is reliable Inter-monsoon showers; rough sea at times

The best beaches on the south and west coast (December to April)

Bentota and Beruwala. Long, wide beaches with large resort hotels, about two hours from the airport, and jet skis and boat trips on the Bentota river. The waves can be strong; swim only where your hotel says it is safe.

Hikkaduwa. A lively beach town with plenty of bars and restaurants. The reef just offshore is part of Hikkaduwa National Park: snorkel, or take a glass-bottom boat. Green turtles often swim in the shallows at the southern end. Don't touch or feed them.

Unawatuna. A sheltered bay a few kilometres from Galle Fort. In season the water is usually calm, which makes it one of the best swimming beaches for families. It gets busy.

Jungle Beach. A small cove on the Rumassala headland next to Unawatuna, a short walk down through the trees from the road near the Japanese Peace Pagoda. Calm water and snorkelling in season. Few facilities, so bring water.

Mirissa. A lively bay with restaurants, sunsets at Coconut Tree Hill and the harbour for whale watching from November to April. Secret Beach, over the hill, is best early in the day.

Hiriketiya. A small horseshoe bay near Dickwella with waves for beginners and experienced surfers, cafés and yoga; very busy in high season. See our best surf spots by season.

Tangalle. Long, quiet beaches. The open beaches east of town (Medaketiya, Medilla, Marakolliya) shelve steeply and have dangerous currents in places. To swim, choose the sheltered coves of Goyambokka and Pallikaduwa, west of town. Silent Beach, on the Goyambokka headland, is a quiet cove.

Rekawa. About 8 km east of Tangalle, Rekawa has been a protected turtle-nesting beach since 2006. Turtle Watch Rekawa, run by the Turtle Conservation Project with the village, takes small groups to see wild turtles lay their eggs. The watch starts at 8.30 pm and costs LKR 2,000 per foreign adult and LKR 1,000 per foreign child (checked October 2026); you may wait one to two hours or longer. Most turtles come from April to July (about 5 to 15 a night), from October to January only one or two. No flash, no white torches, and never touch a turtle.

The best beaches on the east coast (May to September)

Arugam Bay. A relaxed surf village and one of Asia's best-known surf spots; the surf season runs from about April to October. The main point is for experienced surfers; when the swell is up, this is a beach for surfing, not swimming.

Pasikudah. A long, very shallow bay about 35 km north-west of Batticaloa. You can walk far out and still stand in waist-deep water, which makes it one of the best beaches for small children. Several large resort hotels line the bay.

Nilaveli and Uppuveli. Long, sandy beaches north of Trincomalee, with calm sea in season. Uppuveli has more guesthouses and restaurants; Nilaveli is quieter and the starting point for Pigeon Island. Whale-watching boats leave from Trincomalee from about May to October.

Pigeon Island National Park. A small island about 1 km off Nilaveli, with coral, reef fish, turtles and often blacktip reef sharks. The park fee for foreign adults is US$25 plus service charge and taxes; local operators report roughly LKR 12,500 to 13,500 in total, plus the boat (checked October 2026). Don't stand on or touch the coral. The reef suffers from boat traffic and crowds, so go early.

Casuarina Beach, Jaffna. On Karaitivu island (Karainagar), about 45 minutes from Jaffna, with shallow, clear water; alcohol is not allowed. Jaffna is usually dry from February to September.

Is it safe to swim in Sri Lanka?

Yes, on the right beach in the right season. But many beaches have dangerous surf or rip currents at times, and people drown every year:

  • Swim in season. From May to September the south and west coasts often have big waves; from November to February the same goes for the east.
  • Ask first. Your hotel, your driver or the fishermen know where the currents run. Swim where local families swim.
  • Respect red flags and warning signs.
  • Don't count on a lifeguard. In 2026 the police run 71 lifeguard units at high-risk beaches and reservoirs, but many beaches have none.
  • No swimming after alcohol, and keep children within reach.
  • If a current pulls you out, don't fight it. Swim parallel to the beach until you are free, then swim back in.

Did Cyclone Ditwah damage the beaches?

Cyclone Ditwah, in late November 2025, did most of its damage inland, with floods and landslides. In December 2025 the south and west coasts were reported open and largely unaffected, and the east coast mostly operational. We know of no beach still closed because of the cyclone (checked October 2026). The lasting effect for travellers is on the hill-country railway, not on the coast.

How to add beach days to your round trip

  • December to April: end your trip on the south coast. Our 10-day culture and coast trip finishes in Mirissa and Galle, and the family trip ends in Unawatuna. Add three or four nights wherever you like.
  • May to September: go to the east coast. Our summer round trip includes Arugam Bay, Pasikudah and Trincomalee, which is only about two hours by car from Sigiriya.
  • Your driver knows which beach is calm today and can take you to Jungle Beach, Galle Fort or Rekawa at night. If you stay several days in one place, you may not need the car every day; tell us, and we suggest the cheapest way to arrange it.
  • With children, short drives and calm water matter most; see Sri Lanka with kids.

Our round trips cost from US$100 per person per day (two people sharing, 3-star hotels with breakfast, private car with driver).
