Ella, Sri Lanka: best things to do and how long to stay
How many nights to spend in Ella, the main sights with walking times and prices, a 2-day plan and the best way to get there.
Updated: 18 October 2026, 7 min read
Plan two or three nights in Ella. Two nights give you one full day for Little Adam’s Peak, the Nine Arches Bridge and a tea factory; with three nights you can add Ella Rock or a stage of the Pekoe Trail without rushing. Ella is a small village at about 1,000 m in the Uva hills, about two hours by car from Nuwara Eliya, and since June 2026 trains run to Ella again from Nanu Oya.
How many nights should you stay in Ella?
- Two nights cover the main sights at an easy pace.
- Three nights leave time for Ella Rock or a Pekoe Trail stage, plus a slow afternoon.
- One night works only if you are passing through. You will see either the sunrise walk or the bridge, but not much else.
The village is busy with cafés and guesthouses. If you want quiet, ask us for a hotel just outside the centre.

Nine Arches Bridge: how do you know when a train comes?
The Nine Arches Bridge is a stone-and-brick railway viaduct in the forest between Ella and Demodara stations, about 91 m long and 24 m high. You can walk there from the village in about an hour, or take a tuk-tuk to the path above the bridge and walk the last few minutes.
Since 20 June 2026, trains run again between Nanu Oya and Badulla (four trips a day were announced), and all of them cross the bridge. The times change and the online timetable is not always up to date, so ask at Ella station or at your guesthouse the evening before. A train towards Badulla crosses the bridge shortly after leaving Ella. Trains are often late.
Come before 9 am: by 10 am the viewpoints are crowded. It is a working railway with no railings, so stay off the tracks when a train is due. The railway and the Central Cultural Fund announced night lighting and an entrance fee for the bridge in 2025; carry some small cash in case the fee has started.
Little Adam’s Peak
This is the easy walk everyone does. From the village it is about 45 minutes on foot to the start of the path, then 15 to 30 minutes up through tea gardens to the grassy ridge, depending on which summit you go to. With a tuk-tuk to the trailhead, allow about an hour for the return walk. Go at sunrise for soft light and few people; by mid-morning it is hot and busy.
Ella Rock
Ella Rock is the big cliff across the valley. The usual route follows the railway from Ella station to Kithal Ella station (about 40 minutes), then climbs through tea and eucalyptus to a steep final section. Allow 3 to 4 hours for about 10 km return, and start by 7 am to avoid the midday heat. In August 2026 hikers reported a new ticket office near the top charging LKR 930 (about US$3) per adult.
Paths branch, and some locals offer to "show the way" and then ask for money. Take a guide (we can arrange one on request), or walk Pekoe Trail Stage 15: your driver drops you at Makulella, and the waymarked trail crosses Ella Rock and ends at Ella station. Trains run on the line again, so step off the tracks when one comes.
Ravana Falls, Ravana Cave and the Demodara Loop
- Ravana Falls is a waterfall of about 25 m right next to the road to Wellawaya, about 6 km below Ella. Stop on your way to Yala or the south coast. Don’t climb the wet rocks; people have been badly hurt there.
- Ravana Cave, linked to the Ramayana legend, lies just outside the village. Around 600 steep steps lead up to it, so go in the cool morning.
- The Demodara Loop is a railway spiral at Demodara, the next station towards Badulla. The line circles a hill and passes through a tunnel directly under the station. You see it on Pekoe Trail Stage 16 from Ella or on a short drive.
Tea factory, zipline and cooking class
The Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory, about 5 km north of Ella, shows how tea is withered, rolled, dried and graded. Factory tours run from 8 am to 4.30 pm and cost LKR 3,000 per person, with a tasting (checked October 2026).
The Flying Ravana Mega Zipline near Little Adam’s Peak is 550 m long and reaches up to 80 km/h. It costs LKR 9,900 (about US$29) for foreign adults and LKR 6,000 for children up to 15 (checked October 2026).
Several families in Ella run cooking classes, where you cook rice and curry and then eat it together. We can book one on request.

When is the best time to visit Ella?
Ella lies on the eastern, Uva side of the hills, so its seasons differ from Nuwara Eliya’s. It is usually driest from June to August, when the western hills get monsoon rain, and February and March are also good. October to December are the wettest months. Days are warm and evenings cool, so bring a light jumper.
Getting to Ella: train or car?
By train: Since June 2026 trains run from Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) to Ella and Badulla; the ride to Ella takes about 2.5 to 3 hours through tea estates. The line from Kandy to Nanu Oya was still closed after Cyclone Ditwah in October 2026. Apart from the railway, we know of no lasting Ditwah closures around Ella: the road to Wellawaya reopened in early December 2025, and the walks are open. Your driver drops you at Nanu Oya and meets you in Ella with your luggage. Details are in our article on the train to Ella.
By car: Your driver takes the road via Nuwara Eliya, and you can stop at a tea factory or a waterfall on the way.
Where does Ella fit on a round trip?

FAQ
How many days do you need in Ella?
Two nights are enough for Little Adam’s Peak, the Nine Arches Bridge and a tea factory. Three nights let you add Ella Rock or a Pekoe Trail stage.
Is the train to Ella running in 2026?
Yes, from Nanu Oya: trains run again between Nanu Oya, Ella and Badulla since 20 June 2026. The section from Kandy to Nanu Oya was still closed in October 2026.
Can you walk from Ella to the Nine Arches Bridge?
Yes, in about an hour, or take a tuk-tuk most of the way. Ask at Ella station for the day’s train times.
Do you need a guide for Ella Rock?
Not necessarily, but paths branch and are poorly marked. A guide, or the waymarked Pekoe Trail Stage 15 from Makulella, saves you from getting lost.
