We plan trips for first-time visitors every week. These are the things we tell all of them.
1. Distances take longer than the map suggests. Outside the expressways, 60 km can take two hours. Plan two to four hours of driving a day, not more.
2. Don’t try to see everything. Two nights in each place is more relaxing than one. In two weeks you can see the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the hills and the south coast. The north and east need extra time.
3. The weather depends on the coast, not only the month. From December to April go south and west; from May to September go east. See the best time to visit.
4. Apply for your ETA online before you fly. Since May 2026 it is free for many countries, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Use only the official site. Details in visa and ETA.
5. Start early. Sigiriya, the safaris and Horton Plains are best before 9 am. Use the hot midday hours for the pool or a long lunch.
6. Dress respectfully at temples. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes and hats off. Never pose with your back to a Buddha statue.
7. Carry some cash. Cards work in hotels, but you need rupees for tuk-tuks, small shops, some temples and tips.
8. Entrance fees add up. Big sites such as Sigiriya cost US$30 to 35 per person. Plan them into your budget; see what a trip costs.
9. A private driver makes everything easier. Self-driving is possible but stressful. See car with driver or self-drive.
10. Book the train early. Reserved seats on the hill-country train sell out. Parts of the line are still being repaired after Cyclone Ditwah; read the train to Ella.
11. Protect yourself from mosquitoes and sun. Repellent at dawn and dusk, sun cream at midday, and plenty of water.
12. Leave space for the unexpected. A village festival, an elephant on the road, a conversation with your driver over tea. Some of the best moments are not on the plan.
